Kathmandu – Rubi Kumari Thakur, a young proportional representation lawmaker from the Labour–Culture Party, is almost certain to become the Deputy Speaker, drawing significant attention in national politics. Her candidacy has gained strong momentum as political parties move toward consensus, with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) announcing its support.

At just 25 years old, Thakur’s rapid political rise has been accompanied by a surge in her popularity. Her name is increasingly being discussed across social media and public forums. In this context, she is often compared to Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang, known for his independent image, and is being viewed as a prominent face of the new generation in politics.

Analysts believe that Labour–Culture Party Chairman Harka Sampang has played a crucial role in Thakur’s ascent. Known for prioritizing labor, transparency, and alternative political practices, Sampang has promoted youth leadership, bringing Thakur forward as a proportional representation lawmaker. His leadership and support are said to have significantly accelerated her political journey.

Born into a modest family in Dhanusha district, Thakur had a challenging childhood. Due to the family’s weak financial condition, she had to take on responsibilities from a young age. She is one of six siblings—four sisters and two brothers—and carried much of the family burden for years. Her father, Sogarath Thakur, is currently working in Saudi Arabia as a migrant worker, while her mother, Renu Thakur, is a homemaker. The family has largely depended on remittances and subsistence farming on about two bighas of land.

Academically, Thakur also followed a path marked by perseverance. After passing her Secondary Education Examination (SEE) in 2074 BS, she completed a three-year engineering course at Balara Polytechnic in Dhanusha. Following her technical education, she worked in the architecture consultancy sector, earning around NPR 20,000 per month.

With her entry into politics, Thakur has prioritized a labor- and culture-based political ideology. As she prepares to take on the important role of Deputy Speaker, expectations are high that she will represent the new generation while strongly advocating for inclusivity, social justice, and good governance.
