Kathmandu — Today2 Jun 2026, 25years since one of the most tragic and controversial events in Nepal’s modern history: the Royal Palace massacre at Narayanhiti Palace.

On the evening of June 1, 2001 (corresponding to Jestha 19, 2058 B.S.), a devastating incident inside the Narayanhiti Royal Palace led to the deaths of most members of the then Nepalese royal family, including His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev.

Those who lost their lives in the incident included Queen Aishwarya Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah, Crown Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah, Prince Nirajan Bir Bikram Shah, and Princess Shruti Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah, among other members of the royal family.

According to the official investigation report released after the incident, Crown Prince Dipendra allegedly opened fire on members of his family during a gathering and subsequently shot himself. However, more than two decades later, a significant section of the Nepali public continues to question this conclusion and has not fully accepted the official findings.

The incident, which took place within one of the most heavily secured residences in the country, continues to raise questions about how such a tragedy could have occurred under strict security

arrangements. Over the years, various theories, speculations, and alternative narratives have circulated, yet many aspects of the event remain disputed and shrouded in mystery.

The Royal Palace massacre had a profound impact on Nepal’s political and social landscape, ultimately leading to a major shift in the country’s monarchy and governance structure. Even after 25 years, the tragedy remains a subject of reflection and unresolved inquiry, with many Nepalis still seeking clearer answers regarding the events of that fateful evening.
