A powerful earthquake struck near the coast of the Kamchatka region in Russia’s Far East on Sunday. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.

Reuters initially reported the magnitude of the earthquake as 6.2. The Kamchatka Peninsula is a geographically active area and is considered part of the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” The region is surrounded by dozens of active volcanoes and frequently experiences moderate to severe earthquakes due to its location at the convergence of tectonic plates.

The July 20 quake, while not unusual for the region, was considered potentially dangerous due to its magnitude and shallow depth. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of casualties or tsunami warnings.

Earlier, on June 13, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kuril Islands, with the epicenter only 12 kilometers below the surface.
