Indian Vice President Resigns Citing Health Reasons

India : Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post, citing health-related issues. In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar mentioned that he was stepping down from the position with immediate effect in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.
“I am resigning from the post of Vice President with immediate effect as I need to prioritize medical advice and healthcare,” he wrote.
Dhankhar was previously hospitalized in March due to a heart-related condition. Just last month, he fainted during an event at Kumaun University in Uttarakhand. Earlier today, he administered the oath of office to newly elected members of the Rajya Sabha.
In his letter submitted to the President in the evening, Dhankhar expressed gratitude toward the President, the Prime Minister, and the Council of Ministers. He was elected as Vice President in 2022 after defeating opposition candidate Margaret Alva, with two years of his term still remaining. Prior to becoming Vice President, he served as the Governor of West Bengal.
With this resignation, Dhankhar becomes the third Vice President in Indian history to step down before completing his term. Earlier, V.V. Giri (1969) and R. Venkataraman (1987) resigned to contest the presidential election.
