Dipesh shrestha, Nepal, constitutionally declared a secular nation, promises equal religious freedom to all its citizens. Yet, recent events paint a disturbing picture — one that contradicts the very spirit of our secularism. Under the leadership of Communist Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the Christian community in Nepal continues to face systemic discrimination and denial of fundamental rights.

In a disheartening incident from Baiteshwor village in Dolakha, the body of a deceased Christian was taken to the forest for burial. However, locals refused to allow the burial and sent the family back, purely because of the man’s faith. Before this case could fade from public memory, another tragic repetition occurred in Makwanpur, where yet another Christian was denied burial rights in a public cemetery.

Such acts are not just deeply shameful; they are inhumane and represent a serious breach of Nepal’s commitment to human rights, religious tolerance, and the principles of secular democracy. These incidents are a stark reminder that societal prejudice and administrative negligence continue to override constitutional guarantees.

We urge the state, local administrations, and concerned authorities to take these incidents seriously. The right to a dignified burial according to one’s faith is not a privilege — it is a basic human right. No authority, individual, or community has the right to interfere in how a person is laid to rest.

If Christians — or any religious group — are denied their last rites due to their faith, it is not just a violation of religious freedom; it is a crime against humanity and an affront to justice. It is the duty of a lawful and ethical state to intervene, protect its citizens, and prosecute those who attempt to suppress religious expression.

Nepal’s secular identity must not be reduced to a constitutional formality. It must be reflected in action, law enforcement, and cultural respect. Anything less is unacceptable.
