Dipesh Shrestha, Kathmandu, Nepal: Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Prem Kumar Rai, has found himself at the center of serious allegations and mounting pressure. While his tenure has seen action taken against several major corruption cases, questions are being raised about the impartiality and integrity of the institution.

During his time in office, Rai has initiated investigations into both minor and high-profile corruption scandals. However, the decisions and roles he has played in some cases have been widely criticized in the media. Although he has warned that corruption is becoming “internationalized,” accusations of selective prosecution—particularly in the Widebody aircraft procurement case and the Fake Refugee scandal—pose a significant challenge to restoring the CIAA’s historic credibility.

Now, the key question remains: Will there be a logical and impartial investigation into the allegations against Rai? If fairness prevails, the CIAA may succeed in safeguarding its true reputation. If not, the risk of the institution being relegated to a mere political tool will only grow stronger.
