In Bangladesh, a country with a population of nearly 170 million, a student-led uprising brought about political change. On August 5, 2024, then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power, ending her 15-year rule, and a new government was formed.

As political parties engage in a power struggle ahead of the elections scheduled for early 2026, efforts to reach consensus have slowed. Yunus’s government has warned that political conflicts could jeopardize the achievements gained so far.
On July 29, Yunus stated that he is working to build a broad national consensus for a new political system that would ensure inclusive, participatory, and credible elections. According to Yunus’s office, the program will be presented to the nation as per the July announcement in the presence of all political parties involved in the popular uprising, international news agency AFP reported.
