Nepal Striving to Achieve SDGs on Time: Surya Thapa

Nepali Member of Parliament, Surya Bahadur Thapa Chhetri, has stated that Nepal is making efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the stipulated timeframe.
Addressing a thematic session of the conference organized by the Parliament of Turkmenistan, the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), MP Thapa highlighted that Nepal is utilizing the full capacity of its government mechanisms and society to meet the SDGs.
He said, “While we are on track to achieve some goals, we face shortages and challenges in others. To overcome these challenges, we need greater support and cooperation from our development partners. Effective implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action will also help in achieving the SDGs, particularly for landlocked developing countries.”
Speaking during the thematic session, MP Thapa remarked, “We all know that the year 2030 is not far away. Achieving the SDGs by then is becoming increasingly challenging, especially for Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs). Therefore, we need more data, a stronger collective voice, and equitable distribution of resources.”
He further stated that the available data and evidence clearly show that LLDCs are facing unique and inherent challenges in their development efforts. He emphasized that high transportation costs, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to global markets have rendered economic and social development efforts ineffective.
