Kathmandu: An oil tanker sailing near the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified object or possible missile on Tuesday morning, triggering a fire on board, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred east of Limah, Oman, along one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.

UKMTO said the object hit the port side of the southbound tanker, causing a fire. However, all crew members were reported safe, with no casualties or injuries. Authorities also confirmed that there were no immediate reports of an oil spill or other environmental damage resulting from the incident. Maritime security agencies have launched an investigation to determine the cause and circumstances of the attack.

The attack comes amid heightened military tensions between the United States and Iran, prompting renewed concerns over security in the Gulf region. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the timing and location of the incident have drawn international attention due to the fragile security environment surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is regarded as one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with nearly 20 percent of global seaborne oil exports passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption to shipping in the area has the potential to impact global energy markets and raise concerns over international trade and regional stability.
