GNN, Kathmandu — Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir held a bilateral meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting focused on the growing impact of climate-induced disasters and the unprecedented economic and humanitarian losses being experienced by vulnerable countries.

The two foreign ministers exchanged views on the devastating floods that recently struck Nepal, including the loss of lives and property, as well as the increasing risks posed by climate change.

They emphasised the need for coordinated efforts involving all levels of government and wider society to ensure timely recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction in the aftermath of disasters.

Both sides also stressed the importance of mobilising government institutions and social mechanisms to provide immediate relief to affected communities while advancing long-term reconstruction and recovery efforts.

The ministers further underlined the need to strengthen global solidarity and international cooperation to address the growing risks associated with climate change, limited resources and capacity constraints, particularly in vulnerable countries.
