KATHMANDU, Nepal — Nepal’s Labour Culture Party has called for an independent investigation after its chairperson and Member of Parliament Harka Sampang was allegedly prevented from entering the Janaki Temple in Janakpur, describing the incident as a violation of constitutional rights and religious freedom.

In separate statements issued on Monday, the party’s Central Working Committee and Koshi Province Committee alleged that Sampang, who represents Sunsari–1 in the House of Representatives, was stopped from entering the temple while visiting the city for political and organisational programmes. The party also claimed that some of its leaders and supporters were verbally abused and mistreated during the incident, which reportedly heightened tensions around the temple premises.

The party urged the Government of Nepal, the Ministry of Home Affairs and security authorities to conduct a fair and impartial investigation and take legal action against anyone found responsible. It argued that Nepal’s Constitution guarantees equality before the law, freedom of movement, freedom of expression and the right of every citizen to practise their religion without discrimination.

The Labour Culture Party also appealed to the public not to associate the incident with the broader Hindu community, stating that Sanatan Dharma is founded on the principles of tolerance, compassion, harmony and respect. It said Goddess Janaki represents peace, dignity and devotion, and that places of worship should remain accessible to all believers regardless of political affiliation or personal identity.

The incident has triggered wider public discussion over religious tolerance, civil liberties and social harmony in Nepal. While authorities have not publicly announced the outcome of any investigation, the party warned that such incidents could undermine communal harmony if not addressed through due process and the rule of law.

It reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful, constitutional and democratic politics while calling on the state to ensure equal access to religious sites and prevent similar incidents in the future.
