Himanshu Raya –  The English translation poetry collection Nightmare by renowned eastern Nepali poet and translator Badal Chamling was officially launched at a literary event held in Belbari on Saturday.

The book was jointly unveiled by chief guest and senior litterateur and political figure Harkaman Tamang, Belbari Sahitya Bikas Samiti Chairperson Ramesh Niroula, literary critic Dr Mohan Tumbahang, and the translator himself, Badal Chamling.

Addressing the gathering, Harkaman Tamang emphasised the importance of studying the works of distinguished international writers while striving to elevate Nepali literature to the global stage. He expressed confidence that Nightmare would help introduce Nepali literary works to a wider international readership through English translation.

Delivering a critical review of the publication, Dr Mohan Tumbahang acknowledged that literary translation is a demanding task, praising Chamling for undertaking the challenge with dedication and perseverance. He noted that the collection would inspire both writers and readers to engage more actively in literary translation and cross-cultural exchange.

Speaking at the event, Badal Chamling said the collection was prepared with the aim of making Nepali poetry accessible to English-speaking readers by translating selected poems into English while embracing the challenges of literary translation.

Introducing the author and the publication, literary commentator Iran Rai remarked that language teachers should encourage creativity through practical literary work rather than merely analysing the writings of others. He said Nightmare highlights the significance of original writing and translation in enriching literature.

Chairperson Ramesh Niroula observed that only a limited number of local Nepali literary works have been translated into English and expressed hope that Nightmare would open new avenues for the international promotion of Nepali literature.

The programme was attended by several prominent writers, scholars and social figures, including Chandramani Rai, Dr Chhabi Bairagi Ghimire, Parashuram Subedi, Chhatra Limbu, Shankar Gurung, Bhagwati Prasad Ghimire, Tila Lekali, Dewan Kirati, Prakash Dipsali Rai, KP Ghimire, Gagan Yakpangden, Krishna Gurung, Dhanjit Parajuli, Hira Khadka Adhikari, Sanjib Dhimal, Arjun Kulung Rai and Ajit Dhimal.

The anthology features 43 poems, including one translated poem each from 27 different poets alongside 16 poems translated by Badal Chamling himself.

The event was organised by the Belbari Sahitya Bikas Samiti, chaired by Ramesh Niroula, and hosted by poet J.B. Thulung at the Yalang Hotel Hall in Belbari-3, Morang.
