Kathmandu — Severe flooding has been reported in several rivers in Nepal, including those in Rasuwa, following what is suspected to be a glacial lake outburst triggered by an earthquake in Tibet. The floods have caused widespread destruction, with dozens of security personnel reportedly missing and many residents living along riverbanks feared to be unaccounted for.

Authorities fear that the disaster may have resulted in significant loss of life and extensive damage to property and infrastructure. Search, rescue and relief operations are being carried out amid difficult conditions in the affected areas.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called an emergency meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management to assess the situation following Wednesday morning’s devastating floods in Rasuwa. The meeting was convened to obtain an update on the extent of the damage and the progress of search, rescue and relief operations.

The meeting, held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar, was briefed on the preliminary assessment of the damage caused by the floods in Rasuwa. Officials also provided updates on the situation arising from the disaster and ongoing rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas.

Prime Minister Shah directed the concerned authorities to give the highest priority to the search and rescue of affected citizens and the immediate delivery of relief. He called for close coordination among all relevant agencies and instructed the authorities to mobilise the necessary personnel, resources and equipment to the flood-hit areas. He also urged government agencies, security forces and other stakeholders to remain actively engaged in rescue, search and relief operations during the crisis.
