Kathmandu : Nepal has been hit by devastating floods, causing significant loss of life and widespread destruction across several parts of the country. As of the time of reporting, the bodies of dozens of people have reportedly been recovered, while many others remain missing. The floods have also damaged homes, roads, bridges and other vital infrastructure, leaving affected communities in urgent need of rescue and relief.

The scale of the disaster has prompted support from the international community. The World Bank has announced emergency assistance of Rs. 25 billion to help Nepal respond to the disaster and support recovery efforts. The assistance is expected to strengthen the government’s capacity to provide immediate relief and address the extensive damage caused by the floods.

Meanwhile, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane has appealed from Parliament for support from the international community for Nepal’s flood victims. He urged all concerned parties and international partners to come forward with humanitarian assistance at a time when the country is facing one of its most serious natural disasters.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken with Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah and expressed India’s readiness to provide whatever assistance Nepal may require. Modi conveyed his condolences over the loss of life and assured Nepal of India’s support in the ongoing rescue and relief efforts.

Nepal’s major political parties have also issued statements expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction caused by the floods. They have called for intensified rescue operations, immediate relief distribution, medical assistance to the injured and accelerated efforts to locate those who remain missing.

Religious and civil society organisations have also expressed solidarity with the victims. The National Christian Federation of Nepal, one of the major organisations representing the country’s Christian community, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property. The federation has extended condolences to the bereaved families and appealed to Christians across the country to pray for the victims and those affected, while also contributing to relief and humanitarian efforts.

With the flood situation remaining critical in several areas, authorities have urged residents living near rivers and streams to move to safer locations and follow official safety instructions. Rescue teams and security personnel continue to work in affected areas, while the immediate priorities remain the search for missing people, rescue of stranded residents, treatment of the injured and delivery of emergency relief.

The disaster has triggered a nationwide call for solidarity, with the government, political parties, civil society, religious organisations and international partners coming together to support communities affected by the floods.
