GNN, Tanzania — Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal held a courtesy meeting with his Australian parliamentary counterpart in Arusha on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

During the meeting, Speaker Aryal highlighted the longstanding friendship between Nepal and Australia, noting that bilateral relations established in 1960 have continued to deepen on the basis of mutual respect, shared democratic values and cooperation.

Aryal expressed appreciation for the humanitarian assistance and search-and-rescue support provided by the Australian government following the sudden floods in the Bhotekoshi area of Nepal. He also conveyed condolences to the families of Australian nationals who went missing in the disaster and praised Australia’s solidarity with Nepal during the crisis.

The Nepali Speaker also drew attention to the growing impact of climate change on Nepal and other Himalayan countries. He called for stronger Australian support and solidarity in international initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and protecting vulnerable mountain communities.

The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between Nepal and Australia. Aryal said the establishment of the Nepal-Australia Parliamentary Friendship Group could serve as an important platform for expanding parliamentary ties through regular exchanges, interaction among lawmakers and sharing of legislative experiences.

Highlighting the strong people-to-people connections between the two countries, Aryal said Nepali students studying in Australia and the Nepali-origin community there have played an important role in bringing the two societies closer. He also stressed the potential of tourism and education cooperation to further expand bilateral relations.

Aryal proposed greater cooperation toward establishing direct air connectivity between Nepal and Australia, saying it would contribute significantly to tourism, education and people-to-people exchanges.

The Australian parliamentary counterpart expressed Australia’s willingness to further strengthen parliamentary and bilateral relations with Nepal. Aryal reiterated Nepal’s commitment to deepening cooperation at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels, saying closer engagement between the two parliaments could take Nepal-Australia relations to a new level.
